Game: Season Three

Being the wife or girlfriend of a pro-football player might sound like a glamorous and stress-free existence, but Melanie Barnett (Tia Mowry) is about to learn the truth. Melanie’s boyfriend, Derwin, is the new third-string wide receiver for the San Diego Sabers. While Derwin worries about the plays on the field, Melanie learns about the power plays that NFL wives use to get their men the best agents, managers, endorsements, merchandising deals and even the “in” charity. As she deals with egos, groupies and image consultants, Melanie is finding out how “the game” is played among the women in the rear the athletes.

Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime

From Booklist

Even before the book was out, its juiciest bits were everywhere: Sarah Palin was serene when chosen for V.P. because it was “God’s plot.” Hillary didn’t know if she could control Bill (duh). Elizabeth Edwards was a shrew, not a saint. Overall, the men from the campaign gather less attention in these anecdote wars than the women and tend to come off better—but only just: Obama, the authors note, can be conceited and turbulent; McCain was disengaged to the point of recklessness; and John Edwards is a cheating, egotistical blowhard. But, hey, that’s politics, and it’s evident that authors Heilemann (New York Magazine) and Halperin (Time) worked their sources well—all 200 of them. Some (including the sources themselves) will have distress with the book’s use of quotes (or lack thereof). The interviews, according to the authors, were conducted “on deep background,” and dialogue was “reconstructed extensively” and with “extreme care.” So (more…)

Phil Mickelson: Secrets of the Small Game

Amazon.com

Arnold Palmer has one. Jack Nicklaus has one. And now, Phil Mickelson has one. No, we’re not talking about the Masters championships (although Mickelson has three of those), but a golf instruction video. Emmy-winner Terry Jastrow, who produced Palmer’s and Nicklaus’ own bestselling videos, brings his keen eye to this master class that concentrates on what Mickelson calls “the most vital part of the game” (half of all shots played take place inside 50 yards, he states). Over the course of this near two-hour program, Mickelson demonstrates putting, chipping using his advocated “hinge and hold” method, bunker play, and his signature “flop shot.” In an entertaining segment, he also demonstrates two specialty shots, a “Two Balls in Bunker” shot (don’t try this at home) and the “Backward Over-the-Head” shot. The demonstrations are repeated in slow-motion and seen from a variety of angles. This program is for the serious golfer, but beginners need not feel t (more…)

Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime

Review

“A fascinating account. . . . Heilemann and Halperin serve up a spicy smorgasbord of observations, revelations, and allegations. . . . Game Change leaves the reader with a vivid, visceral sense of the campaign and a keen understanding of the paradoxes and contingencies of history.” (Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times )”A smoking new book. . . . The real revelation in Game Change: Campaigns turn our politicians into lunatics.” (Tina Brown, The Daily Beast )”A thoroughly researched, well-paced and occasionally very amusing read. . . . The result is something that conveys the feel, or perhaps more accurately the smell, of one of recent history’s most gripping elections, and it does so better than any of the other books already on the market.” (The Economist )”An incredible piece of work. . . . One of the best books on politics of any kind I’ve read. For entertainment value, I put it up there with Catch 22. . . . An absolutely gripping read . . . they can enter.” (Cl (more…)

Trouble Board Game

Distress Board Game

Amazon.com Review

Distress is a board game with a simple concept: Be the first player to send your four game pieces all the way around the board, moving spaces determined by rolls of the dice. The “distress” of the title comes when an opponent’s piece lands on a space occupied by your piece, thus sending yours back to the beginning. Parents will likely remember the game from their youth, or at least remember the game’s signature gimmick, the pop-o-matic dice roller. The Pop-o-matic is a dome-shaped clear plastic housing for the dice in the center of the board game that automatically tumbles the dice when pressed down and released. This feature, plus the board’s plastic slots that hold the game pieces in place, make Distress a perfect journey game–car or boat motion won’t upset the game’s progress. It is indeed satisfying to press, slap, or pound the pop-o-matic. It’s strong enough to withstand the frustration of the losing player(s). The game’s simplicity makes it easy to (more…)
